At the edge of the "Vallée des Merveilles", the village of Breil sur Roya, county administrative centre, 2092 inhabitants, is the symbol of these villages of the Maritime Alps built between the sea and the mountain.
Breil sur Roya, with a total surface of 8131 hectares, includes a part of the national park of Mercantour.
Located at 300 metres high, Breil sur Roya is subject to the sea influence brought by the wind from the Bay of Gênes thus enjoying a microclimate with mild temperatures and relatively mild low seasons.
Its rich cultural heritage attests a magnificent past and you can still admire at the bend of the alleys the wondrous chapels, the parish church, real master-work of the baroque art.
Surrounded by olive trees, Breil sur Roya had up to100 000 trees and the extracted oil was exported to Scandinavia and served in the Court of Russia.
In the1920's, a stretch of water has been developed in the heart of the village to supply a hydroelectric plant, in the place where the river was the largest. Now, it's the paradise for trout fishers and kayakers.
